Author Interview: Deepti Sehgal on How to Transform Your Body and Mind the Ancient Way

Hey everyone! And welcome back to my author interview series.

 

This week, I am chatting with Dr. Deepti Sehgal, author of Body & Mind Transformation The Ancient Way. Her book changes the way we look at health and wellness, and introduces many natural and holistic approaches to living a better, healthier, and happier life. Many of these ideas come from our ancestors, who, it turns out, could definitely teach us a thing or two about living!

Let’s see what advice she has to give us about becoming a better version of ourselves – and about writing!

 

 

 

Hi Deepti! I think that the best way to start an interview is to ask the author what they would most like to be asked. What is the one question that you wish people would ask you about your latest book?

Is your book different from other health, diet or wellness books. What new concepts have you covered in your book and how will it help us?

I think we’ve got those covered! Now, on the other side of the coin, which typical author interview question do you hate the most? (I won’t be offended if you choose one of mine. :P)

This very question…lol! I love coming across questions & challenging my mind to think beyond limits. That gives me food for thought for my next book work.

Haha! Point taken. :P Now for a better question: Can you give us a short description of your book or books?

In two words if I have to explain my book, it is ‘Health Empowerment’.

As a holistic health & wellness consultant, I am working on a very unique concept of mapping the ancient health & healing practices from ancient literatures of Macrobiotics, Traditional Chinese Medicine & Ayurveda with the modern lifestyles of the people in the form of holistic dietary & lifestyle packages. This book is an important tool to carry this mission forward as it talks about modern health issues as well as the applicability of ancient concepts of health & well-being, as were practiced globally in ancient times.

This book passes a strong message that before understanding our foods & exercising regimes, we must first understand our body & its functioning. Primarily, it is not our foods, but the applicability of foods, & our lifestyles, that make all the difference between a healthy or a diseased state of body & mind.

This is a revolutionary book in & the foundational health & well-being topics covered in this book have never been touched upon so collaboratively. This book delves into the health state of humans in modern times. Alongside, it puts across the traditional viewpoints on health & well-being adopted from ancient works of Macrobiotics, Traditional Chinese Medicine & Ayurveda. This book strongly justifies why ancient healing practices understood human body & health far better than how it is understood in modern times. It explains how preventive healing was practiced by various ancient cultures of the world globally, way before modernization made the world sick! Wow, that was a great description! It sounds like you really cover everything in this book. Your book is in the Health and Wellness genre. What drew you to this genre? Do you also like to read books in this genre?

I always had an inclination towards natural ways of maintaining health at the body & mind level. However, I got into the field of health & wellness field after my studies into Macrobiotics. The natural health concept through foods engrossed me so much that soon after I enrolled for a doctorate into Oriental medicine. Now, I am pursuing studies in Ayurveda. And yes, I love reading books in various natural modalities in ancient health & wellness genre.

Is there any famous author that inspires you, or that you admire?

Though is tough to point any one author that inspires me, for now I can think of Deepak Chopra and Robin Sharma, whom I relate to in terms of thought process.

Who is your target audience for this book? What do you think will appeal to them about Body & Mind Transformation The Ancient Way?

The target audience of this book is anyone who values liveliness, positivity, health, happiness & wellness the most in life. It is for the people who seek to be healthy & well, but do not understand what health & wellness is all about. It is also for the people who follow the best diets ever & follow an exercise routine come what may, yet, do not feel & perform to the best of their potential. Most importantly, the target audience of this book is all diseased people who continue to live under the shadow treatments in a hope to achieve fake levels of health by investing their life, energy & resources on external treatments versus focus on internal healing.

Most of the health & wellness books are instructional & tell you to follow a plan. Body & Mind Transformation The Ancient Way will NOT instruct you to follow a diet plan. This book will make you understand why you must follow a diet, why you must follow the early waking & sleeping cycle, why modernization is killing us and why our deviated focus from our internal selves is the major cause of our health issues.

The concepts covered in this book are thought-provoking and revolutionary. After reading this, people will realize that nothing but their own habits, dietary patterns, lifestyles & thoughts are the major cause of their sufferings. With that realization, this book empowers people to set right limits for yourself & thus be able to live life in right light, be it diet, lifestyle or thoughts.

When you write a book, do you plan out everything beforehand, or do you let the story follow its own course?

When writing a book I do have some thought & concept in mind. I create an initial structure to begin with. However the course does get altered for good when I pick the flow of writing.

Do you have any quirky writing habits?

Yes, I keep researching & researching & researching to get the best concepts out. In the midst, I end up dealing with a lot of content!

That sounds like it could overwhelming! Do you have any writing tips for other writers who might want to follow in your footsteps?

Writing is an art & there is a way of structuring the ideas into a writable shape. The best way to get started is to pick selected topics, create a logical sequence and brainstorm each topic in a question & answer form, where you think of questions that you would want to answer in that topic & then think of answers. Your book will shape up much better this way!

That’s some great advice. In that same vein, what would you say is the best way to market your book? With which method have you had the most success so far?

Creating a direct connection with the audience for conveying ideas & concepts. However, it is important to do your best on social media platforms from revenue generation perspective. Both strategies need to be practiced side by side for a book & the author to be successful.

How did your book come to be published? What was your personal journey to publication like? Did you get a lot of rejection letters before you finally saw your name in print?

The publishing journey taught me a lot. There were challenges though, but for next time now I have good knowledge of publishing process, contacts, networks and approach. Mine is a self-published book initially, but the script is under consideration by various publishers and the response is good, so no rejections till now!

We’ll cross our fingers that you’ll find a great traditional publishing deal! One last question before we wrap things up: Is being a published author everything you dreamed it would be? If not, how is it different? Is there anything you would change about it?

The ‘author’ status has definitely given a high boost to my confidence & I already feel different in terms of my thought-process.
